Tying Up Loose Ends

One more week and my list is long! I’ve got a lot of things on my t0-do list; some of them having to do with Christmas (like shopping for the men in my life, so hard!) and some of them have to do with preparing for 2011, particularly with my business.  I’ve been rewriting contracts, designing my new logo and watermark, etc. I’m trying to create a unified brand that will be recognizable and consistent throughout my website, Facebook, packaging, etc.  I also need to wrap up my bookkeeping so it will be ready for taxes. That is not fun at all!

I’m pretty sure that the only thing I got done this morning so far has been changing that monumentally stinky diaper which conveniently overflowed into Micah’s pajamas.  What would babies do without their mothers? They are so helpless and cute (and stinky).

Here’s a cute photo from this past week. I also entered it into Pioneer Woman’s Photography Assignment this week. (You can see the new watermark I’ve been working on, too)

Here is a sneak preview of my new logo:

Duck-eeee

When Micah was born, my grandma (on my dad’s side) made him a little yellow sweater with a row of ducks on the front and a zipper up the back. He wore it a few times last year, but he was swimming in it. This year it fits him perfectly! I figured, why not put him in it and take some pictures? It’s only going to fit him for so long. He is growing like a weed!

(All images taken with a Nikon D3000 & a 50mm 1.4)

I was also getting buggy from staying inside all week (we were sick last week). Plus, it was 69 degrees outside! When it gets that warm in November, especially in the midwest, you have to take advantage of it. I know that it will only be a matter of weeks before the air becomes frigid and bitter. Autumn has got to be the shortest season around here. It always feels like there are two weeks of fall weather in between the sweltering heat and numbing cold.

We had fun. The only bad part was I had to keep blocking him from running into the road, and every time he would be running so fast that when I put my arm in front of him, it ended up knocking him clear to the ground. I felt so mean, but you know, he was giggling so I think he was falling on purpose. He does that  lot lately, actually. He is a little stuntman. Don’t be deceived by the ducky sweater. He is a tough guy.

I am loving my new 50mm lens. I have been making a point of practicing with it as much as I can. It is more difficult to focus because the depth of field is so shallow, but I am getting the hang of it. It helps that this is a fast focusing lens. I turned off the 3D tracking though, because I really don’t want my point of focus moving around with this lens. That was a great feature with my kit lens, but I am not a fan of it with this one. I want to have a set focus point, center it right on the eyes, focus, and then recompose my shot without the focus jumping to Micah’s hand or something.

I have been working so hard lately at my new photography business. There is so much to learn and I will be changing a lot at the new year in terms of pricing and policy. It is a little nerve-wracking, and yet, I am glad that I am doing this because by the time Micah (and any other kids we might have) are in school and I am ready to make this a 40 hour/week adventure, hopefully the kinks will already have been smoothed out and it will be an easy transition to “full time.” I always remind myself that the reason I am going into business (rather than remaining a serious hobbyist) is so I never have to work for someone else, ever again! That goal makes it all worth it.

Speaking of my photography business, I got my shiny new business cards today. What do you think?

On the other side there are three more pictures and my contact information in place of the logo. I ordered 1000, so if you want some to pass out to your friends, you can! (Shameless plug!)

Some Guys Like to Fish…

Some guys like to golf.  Some guys like to watch Sport Center all day. But my man is a gamer.

It’s weird because Eric quit gaming a few months before we met. So the whole time we were dating, I never saw him strap on the headset and click at lightening speed like he does every night now. It wasn’t until I started working at Walgreens a few months after we got married that he started playing again. I blame Walgreens. I was never home; what else was he going to do?

He plays a bunch of different games. One of them irritated me so much, that I prayed for him to stop playing it. (World of Warcraft) Luckily he stopped and I started making him dinner again. Just kidding about the dinner part.

I feel fortunate, though, because he has self control when it comes to his hobby. He waits to play until Micah has gone to bed and we have had time to talk and hang out for a while. Then I go to my computer and he goes to his. I think of it as a modern day version of me heading off to darn a sock and him going off to polish his gun. Except… this is much more fun than socks or guns. Also… I’m pretty sure Eric is still playing with virtual guns. I don’t know… it sounds like he’s killing something but I couldn’t tell you what it was.

Do any of you play computer games — or do your spouse’s play? What do you think of it?

Little Monster

I’m fairly certain Micah’s Halloween costume is supposed to be a dragon. But aren’t dragons supposed to be scary… not cute, cuddly green monsters you want to pick up and snuggle? Hmmm….

I’m 95% certain Micah said, “I love you” today after I gave him a big smooch. Oh my heart…

Today was one of my most productive days in a long time. I cleaned and organized the whole kitchen. I created a ton of counter space by putting away cookbooks and appliances I don’t use very often. I can’t believe how much bigger it looks! They always have you do these things when you are trying to sell your house, but lately I’ve been doing them for myself. Why should I spoil the people who don’t even live here? I should enjoy this house as much as I can while we are still here. (Our house is not currently on the market, but we’ll likely list it in the future when the time is right.)

I also had the biggest adrenaline surge I’ve had in a long time. Okay, don’t laugh, but it was because I was bidding on this amazing lens on eBay and I won it! I think the seller either had no idea what they were selling or they low balled the starting price to gather attention, only there were just 3 people bidding on it and this $600 lens was $20 with 35 minutes remaining. I decided I wanted to pay no more than $50, so I opened up a second window to place my maximum bid at $50.14 (that’s a little ebay trick I learned) and waited to click “confirm.” Then in the first window I watched the auction like a hawk. It got down to 10 seconds and the bid was up to $30, but was climbing every few seconds which told me the two people were warring over it. They had no idea I was just about to end their little party. I had my trigger finger ready in the other window. I watched the clock…. 9… 8… 7… 6… 5… CLICK!! I clicked “confirm” with 5 seconds remaining and it took 2 seconds to load. When the page refreshed I had won the lens for $41!! I about died. DIED!! My heart was literally thudding in my chest like a drum. I thought I was on the verge of a heart attack. Is this a sign that I am a true photography nerd? OH man…

It’s a classic Nikkor in great condition. 50mm f/1.2 manual focus prime. It’s extremely fast and the bokeh is BEAUTIFUL. Aaah! Like I said… I died. Now I can’t wait to get this puppy in the mail and play with it. I still can’t believe I won… and for such a low price.

Things I Love Right Now (Thankful Thursday Linky)

Hot Coffee, brewed dark from fresh ground, freshly roasted beans, with a generous splash of creamer. No sugar. In a big fat mug. Yum. Eric and I are hooked on this locally roasted brand of coffee called Jadabug. I linked to it yesterday if you are interested. It is seriously the best coffee I have ever had, and it tasted the way a coffee house smells. It’s never bitter! The Colombian roast is my favorite, thought I just bought a bag of decaf so I could enjoy it at night, too. I buy a different kind of creamer every time, just because I like the variety. Right now we’re using the Hershey’s Chocolate Caramel from International Delight.

A blueberry bagel, untoasted, smeared with too much whipped cream cheese, and not the low-fat kind either. Sometimes I put the two halves together and take a big bite because I like the way the cream cheese starts oozing out and you have to lick it before it plops down on your plate.

Eating breakfast with my blue-eyed munchkin, listening to him talk about “sheel” (cereal) and his cup, the neighbor’s dog outside, and horses. Once in a while men on horses ride by our neighborhood, but I think he’s just imagining them because he likes to make the sound of a horse.

Putting my Monkey in the dryer for a photo, because it’s so darn cute to see him sticking out of the door with a load of fluffy blue towels. Plus I have a new trick to get him to smile at the camera. All I have to do is mimic what I want him to do and he copies me, so I plop my arms on the dryer door (or whatever it is at the time) and smile and laugh, then I pause with my shutter ready and wait for him to do it, too. Snap! Perfect picture almost every time.

Thursday Catch-Up

Latest Project:

Last night I had to keep telling myself to breath deeply and be patient. And no, Micah wasn’t giving me trouble; he was already asleep for the night. I was determined to make my photography website design submit to my will. Unfortunately, coding is not my strongest point, and it took me forever to figure out how to put my sliced up Photoshop image back together with html and css. The result? A beautifully customized website that fits my style. It even has roll over image links. I hate templates. If it weren’t for the fact that I needed their structure to get me started, I wouldn’t use them at all.

I have a confession: I teared up a little when I was done because I liked it so much. Is that nerdy or what? Click on the image to go to my photography website and play with the rollover links. While you are there, click the “like” button on my Facebook plugin.

Micah’s Current Stats:

This morning was Micah’s 18 month appointment. He is 25.8 pounds and 32 1/2 inches tall, which puts him in the 50th percentile for his weight and the 90th for his height. Lean and mean: that’s how he has been described from the beginning. This checkup was not as traumatic for Micah as the last one. There were no shots and he only cried a little when the pediatrician tried to look in his ears and listen to his heartbeat. I kept him distracted with my phone and that helped a lot! The really great news was that he had no ear infections, which means the fever and irritability he experienced last week must have been nothing more than a seasonal bug – or teething. I guess we’ll never know. We are still waiting on those 2-year molars, as far as I know. It’s hard to look without losing a finger, know what I mean?

Photo of the Day:

This was taken on Monday morning at my parents house before I left for the dealership to have my new van looked at. (We needed to have the cruise control replaced at no cost to us.) I was excited to see fog because I am doing an engagement session this Saturday and our goal is to get that early morning fog. We are waking up super early. How many people are willing to wake up at 5am just so their photographer can get sunrise and fog shots of them? Not many, that’s why Danielle and Gustavo are so cool!! I’m so excited for that session; we’ll be hitting up the Milwaukee Art Museum as well as a few other places in the city. I love urban settings!

More Photo Fun:

Macro filters are blast to play with! The trickiest part is that the depth of field is so shallow, if you move ever so slightly, you throw your subject out of focus. The white flowers pictured below are very tiny in real life – they are technically a week and grow in clusters everywhere they shouldn’t. Obviously the purple flower is a clover! Do you see the little bug tucked in there? The blade is actually a small palm leaf from a mini palm tree I have growing in my kitchen. And Abe Lincoln never looked so good!

Quiet Time

Some days it’s just nice to hang out at home and read your favorite books with your favorite little person in front of your favorite picture window… and take it easy. (These are from 2 days ago.) Today Micah is finally feeling better, but for three days he had a low grade fever and was just not feeling so wonderful, thus the bink, which we normally only give him at bedtime now. I am happy to say he is running around again today as usual! He had already spilled a bowl of cereal and milk all over the floor and himself, shredded kleenex in the bedroom, and pretty much pulled out every toy in his room. That’s my boy!

One Car, Stir Crazy

Micah and I have been holed up in the house for over a week now and I am going nuts. You see, it all started when Eric replaced the mass air flow sensor in his Corolla. Apparently, fixing one problem revealed several others. I don’t know anything about cars, but what I do know is that car rides like  a donkey in the grand canyon, and that can’t be safe.

I’m a positive person. I don’t see a blue decrepid piece of crap sitting in our garage. I see an opportunity: an open door to a new mode of transportation that doesn’t involve deciding whether to bring the stroller based on whether we’re bringing the booster seat. I see a van in my future. A bright, shiny, used van with hopefully 50,000 miles or less on it. It better have tinted windows and a CD player.

I used to dread the “v word,” but I’ve realized in the past year that picking a vehicle is kind of like picking a husband: it’s better to have one that works than one that looks like Fabio. Good thing I have both, right? Well, at least when it comes to my husband. The corolla doesn’t look like Fabio, nor does it work. But… I’d really like a van that works. I’m not talking about the engine running; I’m talking about a vehicle that is a work-horse. I want a van that does something for me, that carries all my stuff, that zooms onto the interstate, that plays my sesame street CD loud and proud. (I don’t have a sesame street CD…. yet.)

So on Thursday (tomorrow), we are going to van-shop. Hopefully, a great light and a hallelujah chorus will surround the van we are destined to buy. Also, I’m hoping for an excellent price.
