Playing With Lights

I have been making a LOT of upgrades lately in preparation for the summer photography season. (Read: spending ALL of my deposits). Such is the nature of starting a business…. it won’t be this bad next summer. Most of my investments have involved off camera lighting gear. I’d added a few more strobes, several modifiers, and a set of PocketWizards. That’s all in addition to upgrading my camera to a gripped D90. (Ultimately I plan to shoot with a D700, but it doesn’t fit in my budget this year, maybe next year). I’ll be renting fast zooms for my weddings. I’m hoping that my equipment arsenal will be complete in 5 years or less, to where I’m no longer upgrading or renting, just replacing gear as necessary (and hopefully that’s not too often).

ANYWAY…. I’ve been practicing like a fool with my SB700, sometimes putting it on a light stand in a softbox  (for on location shoots) and sometimes bouncing it off walls/ceilings. For all the examples below, I was in my house and the light was very low due to the rain. You would never know it for how nice and bright these are!

For this one I metered for a few stops below the ambient light and fired my speedlight on TTL mode inside a 20×24 Lasolite softbox, directly to the right of Micah.

For these, I bounced the flash to the size and very slightly behind me – basically I aimed the flash head towards where I would have placed the softbox. When I took this picture of Micah, there was still sunlight in the room.

I really need to gel my flash for tungsten light to get my color right, as you can see in the photo below. It was hard to balance the white light of the flash with the yellow light of the incandescent bulbs in the kitchen. I should have also flipped off the overhead light on the stove, I think.

As you can see, bouncing the flash to the side (not to the ceiling, yuck) can really give you some nice directional light. It’s going to come in really handy  in those dark churches this summer!

Everything I learned about using my flash in this way I picked up from here, my new favorite blog!

Location Scouting

Yesterday I decided to finally check out a nearby park that I have heard is a good spot for portraits. About an hour before I planned to leave, my parents called and we arranged to meet up at the park together. I got there about fifteen minutes before they did and tried to do some test shots with Micah. The light and the scenery was awesome and I really look forward to taking families to this spot, but I didn’t get too much of an opportunity to capture it well because Micah kept running away every time I lifted the camera to my face. He totally knew what he was doing, too! I finally just gave up. I don’t think “frustrated” is the right word to use here, since I fully expected him to run away from me every time he saw my camera. I just sort of shook my head and decided that I might as well just enjoy watching him explore.  I got a few keepers, but I really like the shots I got of him playing with his Papa and Grandma!

I just love how you can see the light changing as the sun sets, it was really beautiful!

A Day In My Boots

Let’s preface this “day in pictures” with a short blurb that explains my title. Last week I found the perfect pair of boots at Kohls on clearance for $22. I have been searching for a certain type of boot for years, literally, but every time I would find a pair, they would either be the wrong size or too expensive. Needless to say I was pretty psyched to find these. So imagine my feelings this morning when I found Micah’s missing sippy cup, upside down, inside of my new beloved boot, dripping milk down into the sole. Gross!! Thank goodness the cup had only been missing for a matter of minutes and my son knew how to answer “where is your milk?” by pointing to my boot (which made me shudder). I only soaked one paper towel trying to clean it out, so hopefully it will not stink like rotten Rice Dream tomorrow…

Last week, I loved looking through blogger/photographer Jennie Perry’s A Day In The Life post on her blog The Perrys of West Seattle. I was inspired to do my own day-in-the-life post, and so starting this morning, I tried to capture all the hum-drum of my daily life with my camera. I think today was pretty typical: we didn’t go anywhere, I did some laundry, we read some board books, and I prepared snacks, etc. I guess you’ll just have to see for yourself…

How to Use Clipping Masks to Make Fun Blog Templates

Sometimes I like to frame my pictures with a template to spice up my blog a little bit. I use Photoshop CS4 (hope to upgrade one of these days to CS5!) and clipping masks make template creation a snap. Want to give it a whirl? In this tutorial, I will show you how to make this simple blog template:

22 Months, So Much for Planning

Micah is at that age where taking pictures is almost as hard as chasing him down to change his diaper. Wait a minute, getting him to do anything is hard right now. I had to give him a cookie, which was enlightening, because I didn’t even realize he was old enough to understand the concept of a bribe.

“Micah, I’ll give you a treat if you come over here and lie on the blanket so I can take your picture,” I offered. He paused for a moment and then ran over to the blanket, rolling onto his back and looking up at me.

“Cheeeeese,” he said. Really? I didn’t even realize I had taught him this, either. I snapped a few photos, but then he popped up, ran into the kitchen and said, “treat! Treat!”

Kids catch on fast, don’t they?

So needless to say, I did not do an “official,” planned photo shoot with Micah this month. He is just too antsy right now. I decided to go for “lifestyle” instead.

What a ham! Although, I scored these giggles by wiggling my toes in his side while snapping the picture.

Look at that eyebrow! He is just as mischievous as his daddy. Eric gets this look when he’s up to something. I think it’s a guy thing. They all have plans… and all of them raise their eyebrows while thinking of aforementioned plans.

I put him on top of his toy box… after a few shots he said, “down?” Sometimes he’s a thrill seeker… sometimes he’s not!

Let’s do a little comparison between Micah today and Micah almost 2 years ago!

Same expression, same amount of hair…. way more teeth. Such a stern little dude!

I Heart Faces | Phone Photo Challenge

I did not take a new photo for this week’s theme. Instead I looked back through all the photos on my phone and took way too much time choosing. I couldn’t help it; it was a long walk down memory lane. As I looked through tons of old pictures, I thought to myself…

“Oh I can’t believe how tiny he looked!”

“I totally forgot about that day!”

“Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!”

“What is this?” (Okay, maybe I did not think that, but it’s funny, isn’t it?)

This one is my favorite:

I did a black and white conversion in Photoshop because I do not have a fancy editing program on my non-iPhone. (I have a T-Mobile Dash 3G without the 3G.)

The Story Behind the Cat in the Window

There are several (like 4) stray cats in our neighborhood. I’m not even sure if they are technically stray, but I see them wandering around outside all of the time. When they first started showing up at our back patio window, it was a really big deal. Micah was completely freaking out. He just stayed at the window and said “kitty. kitty. kitty. kitty-cah. kitty. kitty. kitty.” Endlessly. I like to exaggerate, but I’m totally serious. Kitty in the window became a running joke in our house. Don’t say “kitty” around Micah, if you do, he will run to the window and look for it.  The commotion had died down recently since the cats did not come to our house during the whole Snowcastrophy deal, but now that it’s all melted, the cat showed up again today, prompting another “kitty” fiasco. Needless to say, when I came across this photo in my phone, I knew it was the One.

Outtakes

So I thought it would be amusing to share some of the “outtakes” from my mini photo shoot with my sister and her husband this weekend. I (forced) nicely asked them if they would model for me since I wanted some more recent examples of couples’ shoots on my website/Facebook page. If you know my sister, you also know she is very funny! She and Mark kept doing these goofy things and some of the pictures were totally out of focus, probably because I was laughing so much!

All of these were taken with a Nikon D3000 and AF-S 50mm 1.4G in manual. For all you photography fans, I included my camera settings as well.

f/1.8, 1/500, ISO 100

I’m not really sure what they were trying to convey here… but I think it had something to do with her reaction to my feelings about the next shot.

f/1.8, 1/400, ISO 100

Kelly wanted to do this pose. I said no… after all I wanted these for my portfolio! We did a few other poses and I finally gave in. I did not include this in the set I gave them, though. Mark has the RAW on his laptop if she really wants it. Haha!!

f/1.8, 1/400, ISO 100

This is a perfect example of why you should be super aware of your environment when you are taking a portrait. This might have been super awkward if I had not noticed it and moved them before taking the “real” shot (this was a test shot). The branch acts as a leading line right to their crotch… also…. yeah. Just not a good picture at all! LOL!!

f/1.8, 1/500, ISO 100

This one is cute and yet, this is not a pose you want to duplicate. I did not ask her to hold his head like this (haha!), but I do like how it got a genuine smile out of him. It’s okay, they were still laughing and happy when she put her hands down and that’s how I got one of my favorites:

Micah’s 21 Month Pictures

I did a full photo shoot with Micah last month when he turned 21 months. I am trying to plan his 22 month pictures right now and I realized I never really blogged about his last session. They turned out really cute! I printed several of them and hung them up, but last night I tried processing them a different way and I just love how they turned out.  I might print out a few more of these and hang them in his new “big boy” room, which I hope to finish for his second birthday! It’s going to be a cowboy theme, I’m so excited!

The hardest part about this session was the fact that Micah’s red drool (from the sucker) was getting all over my seamless paper and he pretty much finished off that section. I had to clone out all the wet spots and so that added to my processing time. I’ll have to trim that part off the roll and move on to the next section of paper, but the pictures turned out so cute that I don’t mind.

Now I just need to think of an idea for his 22 month pictures…

My PC Is Evil

I am getting super frustrated with my laptop. For one, it has not been loading Windows properly and sometimes it just won’t start up. Eric should be able to fix that, so hopefully it won’t be a lasting problem, but it’s been driving me crazy! I’m afraid to turn off my computer for fear that I won’t be able to turn it on again. I recently backed up all of my photos to another hard drive, just to be safe, but I can only back up so often due to the fact that it takes almost a whole day… as in 24 hours! I’m hoping to buy an external hard drive for back up, which will be a lot faster than backing up over the network. Overall, I think these issues are fixable, they’re just a pain in the butt until then.

What drives me really crazy, though, is something that I’m not sure I can fix. I spend a lot of time trying to get the colors in my photos to be just perfect. It’s essential that the colors on my monitor match my prints, otherwise there is no point in spending all that time trying to make them perfect.  If my monitor is wrong, my pictures could come out too bright, too dark, too yellow, or too magenta, etc. I have been using a color calibration device to make my monitor color perfect, and it does do a great job, but my stupid laptop won’t retain the new settings!!  Just about every time my laptop screen is turned off, regardless of whether it’s because the computer restarted, went to sleep or the display just turned off, the color calibration disappears when the screen comes back on. It drives me crazy!! I can’t leave my screen on 24/7, so I end up spending 15 minutes recalibrating every single time I want to edit photos. That gets old fast!!

I’m working on a Lenovo ideapad and running Windows 7. All I know for sure is that the graphics card is overriding my calibration with its own settings and the result is a very cool, blue looking screen that is way too bright and the gamma is all wrong. It drives me crazy! I’ve been trying to find a solution to make my graphics card “shut up” when it comes to color, but I have not found it yet. There are tons of suggestions, but most of them either didn’t work or only solved it temporarily (ie. until the next time my screen turned off.)

If I could afford to buy the iMac that I want, this wouldn’t be a problem. Macs are so much better for photo editing, but it’s also a pretty expensive piece of equipment. I’m saving up, but I know it’s going to be a while and I’m just cringing at the thought of calibrating every day for the next several months, if not longer. Ayeee!!

Dear Apple, please sell me your 27″ iMac with lots of RAM and hard drive space and CS5 for $1. Thank you! :) hehe!
