Old and Renewed

I’ve always been intrigued by the juxtaposition of nature and man made structures.  Nature is in a constant cycle of life and death and renewal, but things can only get old and worn unless they are consistently maintained and fixed up. Whenever anything man made is abandoned, eventually the earth will consume it. It will be buried by sands, overgrown by plants, rusted by water, faded by sun or eroded by weather.

This afternoon I wandered around his parents’ backyard with my camera looking for something beautiful. There’s something so sad about an old, abandoned playground. This one used to be Eric’s childhood fort and swing set. Luckily Christie is going to be fixing it up in the coming months so Micah can play in it. I imagine it’s going to take a lot of work. I think a family of wasps has taken residence in the fort. We’ll have to make sure they have been evicted before little buddy can climb up into his daddy’s old stomping grounds.

Christie planted these flowers a few weeks ago. They are gorgeous! Nothing says “spring” like new blooms. And to think that creation is only a tiny glimpse of the glory of God…

Still One

Micah is not turning 13 months this week. He is 1 year old. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

His eyes are still blue. If they change now, it will be weird! I love his blue eyes. I hope they are here to stay.

His serious face. He is often contemplating and pondering very important things.

He begins playing as soon as he rolls out of bed (literally rolls by the way.)

He's just smiling because he knows he's about to get a banana for breakfast.

Pointing to himself?

Backyard Shenanigans

Aside from a few drizzles we’ve been having some spectacular weather this week. Micah gets so excited when we go outside. The past couple days we’ve stayed indoors just because we fertilized the lawn and I didn’t want him getting into that stuff. I wish I could explain this to the little boy who has been pressing his nose eagerly against the patio door! I can tell he’s anxious to get back out there and mess with the hose and explore the fence some more. More than anything else, I think he loves the vast amount of space available for running. He just goes and goes… and that has been his phrase lately, “go go go!”

The Big Party

The morning of Micah’s big party, I told Eric, “This is right up there with our wedding.” That was, of course, code for, “make sure nothing bad happens, otherwise I might just cry.” I had no reason to worry, however. The day turned out to be a huge success. I had a blast. Very few tears were shed. Tantrums were avoided. I was amazed at how well Micah handled all of the excitement. More than anything, I felt so blessed to have so many friends and family members there to celebrate my FIRST child’s FIRST birthday.

One thing I definitely do not regret is keeping things simple. Initially, I had a lot of plans for things like favors and elaborate decorations, but I decided to skip those things to save both time and myself from extra stress. In the end I realized they likely would have gone unnoticed anyway.

It was a lot of fun watching him open gifts. At Christmas, he really didn’t know what was going on, but this weekend he really caught on to the whole concept of these colorful boxes being full of toys just for HIM.

I made Micah this shirt using nothing more than my ink jet printer, iron-on transfer paper and a basic white toddler t-shirt (they come in a pack of five). The party theme started out as “Puppy,” but as I changed plans, I realized the only puppy item left was this shirt. Eh, that’s okay. :) I love the shirt anyway!

My neighbor and friend Lindsay made this cute cake for Micah. He was very suspicious of the cake and hardly ate any of it. He doesn’t seem to be that crazy about sweets in general. He prefers chicken and veggies or spaghetti. That’s fine with me!

Rest of the photos are on Facebook for those of you who know me. Enjoy!

Birthday Bash Preview

I started processing the photos from Micah’s big birthday bash (on the 10th) last night. We got some awesome photos and I am having a great time looking through them all.  Here are a few to tide you over until I finish…

Micah is helping my dad play Corn Hole along with his Uncle Mark.

Kyla - half of my neighbor Lindsay's set of twins - running around the yard. She is beautiful!

Marra, my first college roomie, enjoying the gorgeous weather!

You will just have to wait to see more. What a tease I am!

Happy Valentines Day

Micah is a little love bug, isn’t he?

Eric and I celebrated Valentines Day one day early this year with our friends, the Gilmore’s. We always enjoy their company! Lately it seems like every time they visit we make our “famous” homemade pizza, and yesterday was no exception. Barry requested it, and we can’t say no to a pizza request! Our pizza recipe has now surpassed delivery, Barry says, and I have to agree. It’s mouth watering! This time we made a large, five cheese and Italian sausage pizza with “garlic bread” crust.  Everything, including the sauce is made from scratch and it is well worth the effort. In addition to the pizza, we made bruschetta with fresh chopped tomato and basil (Jayna’s recipe), savory garlic bread, a buttery Bundt cake drizzled with caramel topping (also Jayna’s), and fresh strawberries dipped in melted Ghirardelli milk chocolate.  That meal had to be one of the top five meals I’ve ever eaten in my life; that is how good it was. I’m still thinking about it.

Today is a very special day. Micah is going to be dedicated at church this morning! We are very excited and our families will be there to see it as well. Afterward we are all going to a family restaurant for lunch. I am going to dress Micah up in his red sweater again! A baby dedication is a brief ceremony (as in a few minutes), a spoken covenant between the pastor, the church, and the parents, to commit to raising up the child in a loving, Christ-centered environment.  I’m hoping Micah doesn’t freak out when the Pastor holds him during the prayer. Ha!

Win: Face Recognition

I recently updated my version of Picasa, which has already completely changed the way I organize and use my pictures on my computer. I am completely shocked by the new face recognition feature. As we speak it is scanning all of the photos and correctly identifying nearly every picture of me, my husband, my baby, and the numerous other family and friends that I initially named. I feel like I have been thrust into the future and I am a little freaked out. What is most amazing, is that I was going to manually do this exact thing – to mimic the way photos are organized on Facebook – and I was quickly becoming overwhelmed by the task. Picasa is now doing it for me, occasionally asking me to confirm, and it is taking minutes, not months. I love it!

Kim through the years... Thanks to Picasa!

One thing I am noticing – how fun it is to pull various pictures of one person and see how much they have changed over the years.  In the snapshot above, there are pictures from my prom, my wedding, my first Christmas as a married women, and my most recent Christmas family portrait. (Yes I was a blonde once!) I can already tell I’m going to have a lot of fun with this…
